I Need Some Advice

I think there are 3 moms out there. 1-pacifier moms, 2-finger sucking moms, and then neither. I am a pacifier mom. Both my boys are BIG "suckers" LOL. Since Grant was just a week old he could keep his pacifier in his mouth without it falling out. Well, low and behold he had found his fingers. And he really loves them. The problem is, I'm not fond of this at all. I don't want him to get attached to them. I have known too many people/kids who couldn't stop sucking their fingers for the longest time. At least with a pacifier I can take it away any time. Not to mention the huge dental bills.
During the day I have just been replacing his fingers with a pacifier. But I'm worried about the night time. I thought maybe putting on his little mitten's. Any other ideas?

Oh, that's a tough one. My first instinct would be to just let him suck his fingers if that is what makes him happy. I've had 1 pacifier baby (Trent) and one thumb sucker (Trey). You're right, it is much easier to take away a pacifier! Trey developed some sort of blister on his thumb and quit sucking it on his own because it hurt, he was barely one year so I was lucky. My nephew is 5 1/2 and is still sucking away.. it drives my sister crazy. So after much thought, I would suggest sticking the paci in instead of the fingers, then you have some sort of control over breaking the habit! Good luck!

I agree with Janell, it's so nice to be able to take the pacifier away if you want to. But after having a binkie baby, a thumb sucker and a finger sucker- my opinion is that they will do whatever they want! If he wants his fingers then that's what he'll use to soothe himself. I tried and tried to do a binkie with Jake and he insisted on his thumb and still sucks it to this day. It doesn't really bother me. I think it's nice because they can self- soothe very easily, especially at night!

I agree that he is probably going to do what he wants no matter how hard you try to switch him. BTW I used to suck the same two fingers! (And I never needed braces.) That is a cute picture.

It is my son who Janell mentioned, and even tonight I had to remind him not to suck his thumb. The dentist acts like he doesn't suck hard enough to be causing damage, but I just think its kind of gross for a 5 year old to suck his thumb. One plus is that he has always been a really good sleeper because he is able to self soothe. My daughter sucked her fingers too, but stopped on her own. Good luck- I know I'm not much help, but I thought I would share my expertise on the subject.
